One Year of Black Girls In Color
Black Girls in Color Takeover NYC! What started off as an idea is now a #movement and we have the founder of Black Girls in Color (BGIC) to thank for following her gut. One year later, Shanté invited black women from all over to meet in style, in color, in NYC to celebrate one year of BGIC.
As a black girl who’s always had a colorful wardrobe full of statement pieces I knew I had to be there. I hopped on a standby flight, stopped by my home in Jersey and headed to Harlem to be a part of this moment of history. When I pulled up I could see all the girls from a mile away. Beaming in colorful fits, taking pictures, dancing and singing the lyrics to “FNF” in unison, it was #lit. Immediately after I parked (illegally), I joined the group as if I had known them for years and what a time we had.
Black Girls in Color is a Movement
Despite living in a world where so many things try to separate us as black women & girls, it’s nice to see movements such as this. BGIC has brought black women together in style and unity all across the world. Though we connect through fashion, vibrant colors, style, and luxury, it is so much deeper than that. Yesterday proved it! Many of us came solo but left with new connections, perspective, sistership, and community. If that’s not a movement, I don’t know what is.
Black Girls in Color Highlights
Nothing compares to being at an event like this LIVE IN COLOR but I’m sure these colorful highlights will suffice until the next BGIC link up. Nevertheless, a highlight you may not see is how many girls traveled from near and far to celebrate this special occasion. Amongst these beautiful black women in color are scientists, comedians, models, actresses, engineers, entrepreneurs and the list goes on. While onlookers drove by they shouted compliments, honked, hyped us up and took videos from their vehicles– it was truly an honor.
